Garrett Madison, founder, and owner of Maddison Mounntianeering was one of a handful of commercial guides who climbed in Nepal thus far in 2020. Also, unique was his Autumn 2019 Everest attempt where a teetering serac created significant danger for his team resulting in him canceling the climb. I caught up with him between expeditions to discuss these climbs plus an update on a lawsuit he recently won and the prospects for Everest 2021.
The good news is the serac has fallen leaving a massive scar in the Khumbu Icefall. If anyone had been there, we would have seen casualties similar to 2014. Garrett’s Ama Dablam team enjoyed 100% success and he is positive on 2021 climbing prospects. For Ama, his team quarantined in Kathmandu for six days and took two COVID-19 tests, both came back negative for all.
As for the lawsuit, we discuss it in detail but after the interview was recorded, Garrett told me, “The CA lawsuit was dismissed by the judge and he has to pay our legal costs.” Adding, “… never thought I’d get sued for being “too conservative and safety conscious” on a climb!.”
Now on to the interview:

Thanks for the time and beta Garrett!

Surely a “quarantine” where they went out to restaurants and sightseeing was no kind of quarantine at all? Did I hear that correctly? If I did, that was really irresponsible, in my opinion.
Thanks for getting that interview put together. There’s nothing like having someone on the ground with specific training and background to interpret mountaineering risk to give their insight. Great video!
That was an informative interview and quite helpful to see those photos. I too hope that Nepal can open up safely to tourism and climbing, so the Nepali people can get back to higher levels of economic activity.
What Bruce and Phil said! Thank you both
